These are the most popular beaches in Australia, according to TikTok users
Whether you're travelling domestically or visiting from another country, Australia has lots to offer tourists, and is especially renowned for its choice of idyllic beaches.
Specialists in domestic travel, Travellers Autobarn, wanted to find out and highlight the best beaches to visit in Australia, so have put together a ranked list using social media data.
The list includes hashtag numbers from TikTok, alongside average monthly searches for the beaches, to reveal which locations are most popular.
Queensland, of course, dominates the list, but there is a surprise at number one.
Here are the top ten.
10. Palm Beach, New South Wales
Palm Beach, located 41 kilometres north of the Sydney CBD in the Northern Beaches region, is home to secluded beaches and clear, turquoise water.
The location was mentioned in 5,000 hashtags on TikTok and receives on average 24,000 monthly searches.
9. Rainbow Beach, Queensland
Nestled between K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), Cooloola National Park and the Pacific Ocean, Rainbow Beach is an idyllic spot for beach-goers.
Hashtags on TikTok feature Rainbow Beach over 5,200 times.
8. Coogee Beach, New South Wales
Coogee Beach in Sydney is sheltered by a rocky island called Wedding Cake Island which makes it an ideal swimming beach for families.
It was the eighth most popular on TikTok with 6,100 hashtags.
7. Cronulla Beach, New South Wales
Another Sydney beach in the top 10 is Cronulla Beach, with 7,400 hashtags on TikTok.
Cronulla, derived from an Indigenous word kurranulla meaning 'place of pink seashells', is located on the Bate Bay coastline in Sydney's south.
5. Surfers Paradise, Queensland
The rolling waves of the Pacific Ocean at Surfers Paradise are some of the most visited in Australia, and hugely popular, as evident by the 38,500 hashtags for the location on TikTok.
4. Bondi Beach, New South Wales
You can't really have an Aussie beach countdown that doesn't include the world-famous Bondi Beach. But even with 44,700 hashtags on TikTok it narrowly missed out on a podium finish.
3. Byron Bay, New South Wales
Kicking off the top three is Byron Bay on the far north coast of NSW. The coastal spot that has been a mecca for influencers and celebrities over the years has also accumulated 48,700 hashtags on the social media platform. Byron Bay was the most searched for beach online.
2. Whitehaven Beach, Queensland
Despite its 51,000 TikTok mentions, Whitehaven Beach in Queensland's Whitsundays was narrowly pipped at the post, landing in second spot overall.
The winner was a bit of a surprise.
