Injured Australian diver Melissa Wu will rely on the discretion of selectors for a ticket to next year's Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old took to Instagram on Thursday to announce that bulging discs in her back will keep her out of next week's trials on the Gold Coast.

The triple Olympian competed at the FINA Grand Prix on the Gold Coast last month, winning gold with Taneka Kovchenko in the 10m syncronised event.

Wu won silver at Melbourne's Games as a 13-year-old but back, knee and neck injuries have been stumbling blocks in recent years.

"It's definitely frustrating to have worked so hard to prepare for trials only to have injury get the better of me," she wrote.

"I will continue to work hard ... to overcome this injury and get this battered old body ready for next year."

The top two in the 3m and 10m divisions at the Commonwealth Games trials will earn selection for next year's Games.

But Wu could still find her way on to what would be a fourth Games team, with Diving Australia able to select a third athlete for individual events and an additional syncronised team at its discretion.
