Wrong turn proves costly for leaders at Wuxi International Marathon in China
Wrong turns can be annoying when you're driving. We imagine they're even more frustrating after you're at the tail end of a 42.2 kilometre marathon.
That's the position two unfortunate Ethiopian runners found themselves in at the conclusion of the 2017 Wuxi International Marathon in China.
With the finish line in sight, the two leaders were neck and neck and just needed to round the corner to fight out the finish.
Instead, they kept running straight and out of sight of the camera until they were rounded up by an official who pointed them in the right direction (surely, marathons should be better sign-posted!)
By the time they had turned around, a runner from Bahrain had snuck in under their guard and stormed to the finish in a time just over two hours and 12 minutes.
The public expressed their sorrow for the two runners who were beaten, but organisers were quick to deflect any blame of a stuff-up, maintaining the course was up to standard and there was nothing wrong with a sharp turn at the end of it.
