Gridiron: Bears, Rainbow Warriors make history at ANZ Stadium

The record books will be written when the University of California Bears and the University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors open the US college gridiron season at ANZ Stadium.

And Australian fans are not letting the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity pass them by.

The Bears and Rainbow Warriors face-off today for the Sydney College Cup in the opening round of this year's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition.

It will be the first time in 30 years a division 1 football match will be played on Australian soil.

The chance to soak in the atmosphere of the US sport has drawn fans from across the country to Sydney.

"I actually coach some gridiron in Brisbane, and I'd take college football over the NFL any day," Anthony Goodluck told the Daily Mail outside the stadium.

"I'm a big Miami fan … but after that I love Cal State."

Goodluck and his son are not the only supporters excited for the game with fans taking to social media to let the world know they will be part of history.
