Thor Bjornsson finally claims World's Strongest Man crown
Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, AKA 'Thor', can finally claim the title of 'World's Strongest Man' after falling agonisingly short in previous attempts.
Björnsson is best known for his role as 'The Mountain' Gregor Clegane in hit TV show Game of Thrones, but the Iceland native is also a successful athlete in strongman and weightlifting events.
At the competition in Manila in the Philippines, Björnsson finally ended up atop the podium, after six years finishing in the top three.
He was already a four-time winner of Europe's Strongest Man, a seven-time Iceland Strongest Man and the Arnold Classic Champion in 2018, and now he can add World Strongest Man 2018 to his impressive CV.
"Want to thank all of my family, friends and fans for supporting me along the way," the 200kg, 2.1m-tall 29-year-old wrote on Instagram.
Björnsson also had a shoutout for Down Under.
"Winning the Worlds Strongest Man is his greatest achievement as an athlete, and this t-shirt he is giving me as a gift is the t-shirt that he wore the moment he finished the last event to secure his victory," Sebastian Oreb, Bjornsson's Australian strength coach said after the victory.
