Wimbledon 2018 wrap day three: Wozniacki battles bugs during shock exit, Federer, Williams cruise through to third round

The action has continued on day three at Wimbledon with bugs wreaking havoc during an upset result and the big guns firing. Swiss champion Roger Federer was at his best against Lukas Lacko, Serena Williams only needed 66 minutes to account for Viktoriya Tomova, while Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki battled flying ants in her mouth before crashing out against Ekaterina Makarova.

Ekaterina Makarova def Caroline Wozniacki 6-4 1-6 7-5

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki became the 11th women's seed to fall on the first three days at Wimbledon as she crashed out 6-4 1-6 7-5 in the second round to Ekaterina Makarova.

The second seed exited before the third round for the fourth time in seven years after complaining to the umpire about a swarm of insects that invaded No.1 court during the second set.

The Dane fought to the bitter end against the tenacious Russian, but she finally succumbed on the sixth match point after an absorbing clash lasting two hours and nine minutes.

Makarova, three days short of her 30th birthday, broke early to take command of the first set.

Wozniacki then complained about the swarming flying ants on court and asked for repellent spray.

"They're in my mouth and in my hair and everywhere - we need to do something. Is there a spray? I want to be here to focus on tennis, not eating bugs," she said to the umpire.

It seemed to sting her into action, however, as she won five games in a row before claiming the second set.

Makarova came back strongly and looked poised for an easy victory when she led 5-1 in the third but Wozniacki  refused to give up. She produced her best tennis to save three match points when 5-3 and 40-0 behind, and saved another before breaking to level the set.

With both women playing fine tennis and moving each other all round the court, Makarova earned three more match points and converted the second.

"I did everything I could," Wozniacki said afterwards.

"I fought as hard as I could. I can't even be mad at myself because I played up to the level that I can.

"I think (Makarova) played above her level and really raised it and got a little lucky and played well when she needed to."

Roger Federer def Lukas Lacko 6-4 6-4 6-1

Two days after creating a stir at Wimbledon with his new mega-bucks clothing deal, Roger Federer was back making a style statement with his dazzling tennis as he gave Lukas Lacko a straight-sets lesson to reach the third round.

The Swiss defending champion was at his breathtaking best as he crafted 48 exquisite winners during a 90-minute 6-4 6-4 6-1 victory on Wednesday that seemed more an exhibition of his shot-making than a charge towards a record ninth Wimbledon title.

Slovakian Lacko, who is ranked 73rd in the world, saved two set points at 5-3 but couldn't prevent Federer from taking the first set on a rapid service game.

Another effortless topspin-loaded swing from Federer, which claimed the opening break of the second set, was followed by a 60-second service game to pull away with a 4-2 lead.

And Federer was relentless as he lost just nine of 61 total points behind his intimidating service and he closed out the second set with three straight aces.

The third set was one-way traffic as Federer killed the contest with a ferocious forehand after 90 minutes of brilliance.

"I played very well again, I felt good out there, less nerves than in the first round, which is normal," Federer said, after racking up his 93rd Wimbledon win.

"I am happy with how I am hitting the ball and concentration on my own service games and I am able to mix it up on return. I needed to put him away and I was able to do that and I am very happy."

French 17th seed Lucas Pouille fell short in five sets after fighting from two sets down to be beaten 6-4 6-2 6-7 (8-10) 3-6 6-2 by Austria's Dennis Novak.

But where Pouille failed, his compatriot Gael Monfils succeeded in a 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) triumph over Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

Elsewhere, American world No.13 Sam Querrey eliminated Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 6-3 while Russia's Daniil Medvedev, earned a straight-set victory over world Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-3 6-4 6-2.

Serena Williams def Viktoriya Tomova 6-1 6-4

Seven-times champion Serena Williams moved up a gear at Wimbledon to beat Bulgarian qualifier Viktoriya Tomova 6-1 6-4 on Wednesday and reach the third round.

The 36-year-old American barely broke sweat in a one-sided first set but was tested by the world no.135 in the second without ever looking troubled.

While the Centre Court crowd clearly appreciated the sight of Williams in full flow they took a shine to the plucky Tomova who battled hard to make a match of it.

Even ultimate warrior Williams, who was unable to defend her 2016 Wimbledon title last year because she was pregnant, applauded a couple of her opponent's winners late in the second set before completing victory in 66 minutes.

"It was better than my first round and I'm happy that I'm going in the right direction," said 25th-seeded Williams.
