Brazilian star Beatriz Haddad Maia's emotional response to 'very special' crowd after US Open win

Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia will break a lengthy drought for her country at the US Open after downing Caroline Wozniacki in the fourth round on Tuesday morning (AEST).

The 22nd seed held off the former grand slam winner to record a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory in New York, setting up a quarter-final clash against Karolina Muchova.

Haddad Maia will now become the first Brazilian woman to make it this deep at the tournament since Maria Bueno in 1968.

At different stages of her clash with Wozniacki, the crowd began to chant "ole ole ole ole, Bea, Bea" to spur on Haddad Maia.

During her post-match interview, the crowd sung it again for her and produced a special moment as Haddad Maia broke down in tears.

"I was trying to hold the emotions in at the end of the match," she said.

"But now, I couldn't do it. It's very special for me, Brazil is a big country and I know how many people are cheering for me - not only here in the stadium, but at home.

"I feel this support. Tennis is improving in Brazil and I'm very happy to be this person who is representing the women's sport."

Haddad Maia is now entering the business end of the US Open and potential showdowns with the likes of Iga Swiatek or Aryna Sabalenka could await her.
