Thompson out, Ebden through at ATP event

Jordan Thompson's campaign at the ATP's Hall of Fame Open has come to an abrupt end in the second round but Matthew Ebden is through to the last eight.

Third seed Thompson, who is ranked a career-high 43rd and was granted a first-round bye, was beaten 6-2 7-6 (8-6) by Spanish veteran Marcel Granollers.

The news was better for Thompson's fellow Australian Ebden, who easily defeated American Denis Kudla 6-2 6-2 in just 54 minutes.

The world No.110 Ebden will face a stiffer test in his next match against top seed John Isner.

The big-serving American served 25 aces and staved off five break points in his 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 win over Poland's Kamil Majchrzak.

Others to progress to the quarter-finals on Wednesday were fourth-seeded Frenchman Ugo Humbert, Kazakh seventh seed Alexander Bublik and German veteran Mischa Zverev.

The day's biggest casualty was Adrian Mannarino with the second seed from France crushed 6-4 6-1 by Tennys Sandgren.
