Tennis reporter branded clueless

A US tennis reporter has been branded clueless after mistakenly congratulating beaten French tennis player Nicholas Mahut following his loss at the French Open.

As this video shows Mahut was taking questions following his first round loss to Russia's Mikhail Kukushkin, but to add insult to injury a reporter - who clearly did not watch the game - got it horribly wrong during his post match press conference.

The hapless hack went to ask a question of Mahut following his 6-7 (4/7), 6-3, 6-4 defeat, opening with a congratulations line, much to the shock of the Frenchman.

But while he may well have exploded, Mahut calmy responded: "I lost", with the journalist replying that he had been told otherwise.

Thinking on his feet, the reporter then shifted gears to avoid a complete press conference catastrophe. “You lost? Oh, ok. So, uh, what happened out there?” he asked…to which Mahut replied "questions in French".

Game, set and match.
