Suffering from cramp isn’t a foreign experience for most athletes but 19-year-old Nicola Kuhn displayed just what can happen when the body shuts down due to dehydration and exhaustion.

The Spaniard was on his way to a massive upset against German veteran Mischa Zverev when he was forced to retire in the third set of his first round clash at the Miami Open.

The world No.272 couldn’t move let alone continue when his body seized up mid-point causing him to fall to the ground. The crowd was left stunned as he lay face down on the court as ATP physio Alejandro Resnicoff came to his aid.

In a show of sportsmanship, Zverev came over and delivered water bottles, yet Kuhn couldn’t stand and walk himself off court and needed assistance to leave the arena.

Canadian tennis stars Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime tweeted their support for Kuhn.

“Such a brutal sport this is. Hope he is okay,” Shapovalov tweeted.

Auger-Aliassime wrote: “That’s tough to watch. Hope you’re well, my friend.”

To add insult to injury, Kuhn won the first set and was leading the second 5-2 when Zverev hit back to force it to a third set.

Zverev will face 17th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round.
