Just 24 hours after Roger Federer shut down his season to cure a knee problem, Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic also withdrew from the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

The world No.16 has not played since pulling out of her Wimbledon second-round match because of left wrist problem which has yet to properly heal.

"I'm late with my training program, and therefore not completely ready to play in Rio," the 19-year-old said.

"It's with a heavy heart that I must give up the Olympics. I'll use the next few weeks to prepare myself."

Bencic has been dealt repeated injury blows in 2016, quitting three other matches: Sydney semi-finals (illness), Miami second round (back) and the pre-Wimbledon Birmingham event (groin).

The Rio withdrawals leave Stan Wawrinka and Martina Hingis as the Swiss Olympic entrants.

Hingis had been due to play mixed doubles with Federer and Wawrinka was preparing to possibly try and duplicate a 2008 Beijing gold he won with Federer.
