Australian No.1s Bernard Tomic and Samantha Stosur have received vastly different draws for next week's Sydney International at Olympic Park.

While top-seeded Tomic has earned a first-round bye and a relatively smooth passage to the semi-finals, Stosur faces US Open finalist Roberta Vinci in her opener.

It won't get any easier for Stosur even if she upsets the Italian, with second seed Agnieszka Radwanska looming in the second round.

Fellow Australian Daria Gavrilova is also in Stosur's quarter of the draw and takes on a qualifier first up.

Victorian Tammie Paterson meets dual grand slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in a baptism of fire.

In the men's event, Tomic could well oppose two Australians en route to the semi-finals.

He'll come up against the winner of young wildcard Jordan Thompson and Slovakian Martin Klizan in the second round and could strike big-serving Sam Groth in the quarter-finals.

Groth plays Argentine claycourt specialist Federico Delbonis in his opener.
