Three-time major champion Stan Wawrinka has advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Wawrinka advanced after American John Isner was forced to retire over what appeared to be a foot injury.

The Swiss star was leading 6-4 4-1 when the trainer came over to assess Isner's injury, prompting the American to call it a day.

Former British tennis star Colin Fleming admitted the tall frame of Isner might be the reason behind today's injury.

"You just feel for him, he's had so many injury problems over the years," Fleming said on commentary.

"Possibly because of his body shape, 6 foot 10, puts a lot of strain on the joints."

"This is rotten luck for Isner."

Wawrinka's very first Grand Slam title came in 2014 at the Australian Open and today's win will be his seventh trip to the fourth round at Melbourne Park.

Wawrinka will face the winner of Alexei Popyrin and world No. 4 Daniil Medvedev's match in the next round.
