Alexei Popyrin has been beaten in the opening round of the ATP Tour's Open Sud de France on Wednesday.

The Australian young gun failed to win a game in the first and third sets as he had his serve broken on six occasions in a 6-0 6-7 (7-9) 6-0 defeat to Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

The win halted a three-match losing streak for world No.45 Mannarino, who saved all four break points he faced as he advanced to a round of 16 shodown with countryman and top seed Gael Monfils.

France's Gregoire Barrere upset fourth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-5 while Vasek Pospisil put out fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the third seed, 6-2 6-3.

Three-times champion Richard Gasquet accounted for Gilles Simon in straight sets in their all-French encounter.

Gasquet won 6-4 6-4 to set up a meeting with Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.

The 38-year-old Lopez overcame eighth-seed Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6-4 6-1 in 69 minutes.
