'Major shocker' as Alex de Minaur stunned by world No.103 at Mexico Open to end win streak

Alex de Minaur was eliminated at the ATP Mexico Open by world No.103 American Patrick Kypson, bringing his win streak in Acapulco to an end.

The Australian went down 6-1, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) and was competing in his first tournament since claiming the Rotterdam crown two weeks ago. He was on a 10-match win streak in Acapulco having won the title in 2023 and '24, but gave it a miss last year.

De Minaur - the tournament's No.2 seed and world No.6 - sprung back to life after being hit off the court in the opening set, taking the second and then moving ahead by a break in the third.

But he couldn't put the American away, who levelled the match at 5-5 and then came back from 2-0 down in the tiebreak.

De Minaur had the chance to put him away again, when Kypson was two points from defeat as De Minaur served for the match at 5-4 in the decider.

But the American qualifier held firm to force the tie-break and sealed a hard-fought win in two hours and 39 minutes.

The victory for Kypson was his first on the ATP Tour since Indian Wells in 2024.

"It feels amazing," Kypson said.

"Everything was important. I had to serve well. I had to return well. I hit my forehand really big. Luckily, I was able to do those things for a pretty extended period of time.

"[Staying calm and composed] does not come naturally to me.

"That's probably one of the hardest parts of playing the sport, just keeping it together."

The 26-year-old American received a boost to his ranking, moving up seven spots to No. 93.

De Minaur is hoping to make a deep run at Wimbledon after crashing out of the Australian Open at the quarter-final stage once again
