John Millman's hopes of a return to the final of the ATP Tour's Hungarian Open are over after he was beaten by local wildcard Attila Balazs in the second round.

Australian sixth seed Millman battled for more than two hours before he succumbed 6-4 2-6 6-2 to world No.246 Balazs.

Millman - who made his maiden ATP Tour final last year on the red clay in Budapest - could only convert two of 11 break-point chances and will drop from 39th to at least 48th when the next rankings are released.

The 30-year-old Balazs - who returned to action in March after missing seven months due to a hip injury - will face Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the quarter-finals after the Frenchman defeated German Matthias Bachinger 7-5 6-2.

In first-round action, there was a notable first ATP main draw win for 17-year-old Italian Jannik Sinner, who saw off Hungary's Mate Valkusz 6-2 0-6 6-4.

Uruguay's Pablo Cuevas won his way into a second-round showdown with top seed Marin Cilic after a 6-3 3-6 6-4 victory over German qualifier Yannick Maden.
