Local juniors advance at Aust Open

Oliver Anderson, Max Purcell and Violet Apisah flew the flag for the locals on Australia Day, the trio winning through to the third round of the Australian Open juniors draw.

Anderson, a wildcard entry from Brisbane, upset French No.14 seed Ugo Humbert 6-2 7-5 in the second round of the boys' draw, while Apisah beat Italian Ludmilla Samsonova 6-4 6-1 to progress on the girls' side.

Anderson, coached by former Australian Davis Cup player Wayne Arthurs, will meet Hungarian No.1 seed Mate Valkusz in the third round.

Apisah set up a clash against Ukrainian 16th seed Dayana Yastremska.

Sydneysider Purcell also progressed with an upset 7-5 7-6 (8-6) victory over American No.8 seed Ulises Blanch.

He will meet Eduard Guell Bartrina in the third round after the Spaniard defeated Australian qualifier Lucas Vuradin in three sets.

Anderson and Purcell join top-ranked Australian, No.6 seed Alex De Minaur, in the third round of the boys' competition.

Apisah, Sara Tomic and Baijing Lin are the remaining local hopes in the girls' draw after Petra Hule and Jaimee Fourlis bowed out in the second round at Melbourne Park on Tuesday.
