Lleyton Hewitt to come out of retirement to play doubles with Alex de Minaur
Lleyton Hewitt will come out of retirement again to play doubles with Aussie young-gun Alex de Minaur at the Estoril clay-court tournament in Portugal.
The pair were spotted together earlier this year training at Hewitt’s tennis facility in the Bahamas.
"We have a wild card, we have ex-number 1 Lleyton Hewitt...who will break his 'retirement' to play at the Estoril Open alongside countryman Alex de Minaur," organisers tweeted.
The 37-year-old last played with fellow Aussie Sam Groth where the pair reached the quarter-finals in the doubles tournament.
The former US Open and Wimbledon champion retired in 2016, assuming a full-time role as Australia’s Davis Cup coach.
De Minaur, 19, turned professional in 2015 and is ranked 114 in the world.
The rookie made his Davis Cup debut for Australia in 2018 but lost his singles rubber against German world No.5 Alexander Zverev in five sets.
The 18-year age difference between the duo is one of the largest seen on the doubles tour.
