Kyrgios pulls off ridiculous, unnecessary 'tweener
Nick Kyrgios lived up to his reputation as the consummate showman in the first round of the Australian Open after pulling out an absurd and completely unnecessary ‘tweener.
The controversial star was serving during the third set with the luxury of being two sets and a break up when he threw one of the basic tenets of tennis out the window: letting the ball go out if it’s flying long.
Footage shows Kyrgios serve down the middle, with his opponent Pablo Carreno Busta unable to control his forehand, hitting it long but straight back at the 29th seed.
Instead of letting the ball fly comfortably past the baseline, the 20-year-old Australian took an exhibition game approach, hitting a volley between his legs back to Busta, who could only spray the forehand wide.
Kyrgios went on to win 6-2 7-5 6-2 to progress to the second round and while the ‘tweener was definitely entertaining, we’re hoping Nick pulls it out only when necessary as he hopefully goes deep into the draw at Melbourne Park.
