Australia's Nick Kyrgios showed his fighting quality, stealing a set from world No.3 Andy Murray before falling in his opening round at the US Open.

Kyrgios dropped the opening two sets 7-5, 6-3 and appeared to be destined for a straight sets exit.

But the tennis bad boy dug deep in the third set to come roaring back into the match to snatch the momentum, winning 6-4.

However, the comeback was short-lived with Murray claiming an early break in the fourth set before going on to win 6-1 and send the 20-year-old packing.

Fox Sports commentators John Newcombe and Wally Masur were full of praise for Kyrgios' performance.

But Murray showed his experience to win all the big moments.

Kyrgios' defeat came after Lleyton Hewiit and Bernard Tomic set up a second round clash with wins earlier in the day.

The performance provided another example of his contrasting persona with the young gun delivering a spray to the umpire early in the match and also playing a wonderful trick shot.
