Gavrilova exits Palermo in opening round

Australian Daria Gavrilova has bowed out of the WTA's Palermo Open in the first round after losing to Swiss ace Jil Teichman in straight sets.

Gavrilova fell to eighth-seeded Teichman 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 in two hours and six minutes in the clay-court tournament in Sicily on Tuesday.

The Swiss is one of only two players at the tournament, along with Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens, to have won a WTA title this season.

Top seed Bertens was clinical in her 6-0 6-1 win over Ekaterine Gorgodze in their opening-round clash.

Italian wildcard Sara Errani, a two-time champion and two-time runner-up in Palermo, was beaten by Hungarian qualifier Fanny Stollar 6-1 3-6 6-4.

Italian Jasmine Paolini eliminated sixth-seeded Laura Siegemund 6-1 6-4 and Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu beat Croatian qualifier Tereza Mrdeza 7-5 6-2.
