Ferrer gives Jasika a tennis lesson

Spanish veteran David Ferrer has given local teen Omar Jasika a tennis lesson with a straight-sets victory in their round-one Australian Open clash.

Seeded 21st, Ferrer steamrolled the 19-year-old wildcard Jasika 6-3-6-0 6-2 at Hisense Arena.

Jasika went into the encounter with high hopes against the former world No.3 and held his own in the first set with just the one break of serve separating the pair.

But the remainder of the match was one-way traffic.

"It was pretty close in the first set and I was trying to stick it to him as much as possible but then it got away from me," Jasika said.

"He started playing better and was more aggressive and he got the lead and that was it and I struggled to play my game out there."

Ranked 290, Jasika is trying to make the leap from the junior ranks, where he claimed both the US Open singles and boys doubles in 2014.

"I'm going to take what I can out of the match and I know that if I want to play at that level I need to get fitter and stronger," he said.

The 34-year-old Ferrer, who has made the semi-finals twice at Melbourne Park, is making his 15th successive appearance.

Currently the world No.23, he will next face American qualifier Ernesto Escobedo.
