Federer through Aust Open first round

Former world No.1 Roger Federer is safely through to round two of the Australian Open after eclipsing qualifier Jurgen Metzer.

The four-time Australian Open champion, seeded 17, showed flashes of his brilliance as he overcame the Austrian 7-5 3-6 6-2 6-2 in Melbourne on Monday.

Federer is returning to grand slam tennis after a six-month absence following a knee injury.
