Tsonga admits below best, despite easy win
Crowd favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga says he was not playing his best tennis despite appearing in cruise control in becoming the first Frenchman through to the Australian Open third round.
A finalist in 2008, Tsonga was rarely pushed as he sealed a 6-2 6-2 6-3 win over Serbian Dusan Lajovic in one hour and 46 minutes on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old Tsonga was cautious to talk up his chances of making the last 16 - a feat achieved in his past four ventures to Melbourne Park - but remains confident of his progress.
"Every day is different," the world No.12 said.
"I'm playing well for the moment, so I will prepare for the next match and see how it goes.
"But, of course, I'm confident, because I played well the two first matches."
Tsonga is in the same quarter of the draw as fourth seed Stan Wawrinka and big-serving Croatian Marin Cilic and could face 23rd seed Jack Sock in the next round, if the American can get past Karen Khachanov.
Tsonga, a former world No.5, is one of four French seeds remaining in the men's draw with Gilles Simon, Gael Monfils and Richard Gasquet set to take to the court on Thursday.
