'A coming-of-age win': Aussie teen Emerson Jones stuns opponent twice her age at Brisbane International

Australian teenager Emerson Jones has announced her arrival on the world stage with a clinical Brisbane International debut on Monday night.
The 17-year-old Aussie thrived in front of her home crowd at Pat Rafter Arena, claiming an upset win over Germany's Tatjana Maria — a player more than twice her age at 38 — 6-3, 6-3.
It was a masterclass in power and craft from Jones, who showed remarkable composure to brush aside the world No.43. The victory marks just the second top-50 win of the teenager's burgeoning career.

Jones, ranked No.147 in the world, peppered the court with winners from all angles, but it was her tactical awareness — using drop shots and overheads — that allowed her to outsmart Maria, a veteran 21 years her senior.
"Extraordinary. What a way to do it," Tom Rehn said in commentary.
"Joy for Jones, a coming-of-age win for the 17-year-old."
As the daughter of Olympic triathlon silver medallist Loretta Harrop, athleticism runs in the family.

Speaking afterwards, the Gold Coast product, who trains at the Queensland Tennis Centre, admitted that winning at her home venue made the moment even more special.
"Honestly, I'm just super happy. This is honestly the best tournament, the best crowd, and I'm so happy my family got to come," she said.
"Thank you, everyone."
A former junior world No.1 now transitioning to the professional circuit, Jones frequently draws comparisons to three-time grand slam champion Ash Barty.
Jones joins fellow Australians Kimberly Birrell and Olivia Gadecki in the second round.
Her next challenge comes on Wednesday against the 10th seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Jones will make her second consecutive appearance at Melbourne Park later this month, having already been awarded a main-draw wildcard for the 2026 Australian Open.
