Barty through to Canadian Open round of 32

Australian Ashleigh Barty has bounced back from a second-set stumble to win her opening round match at the Canadian Open.

The 22-year-old Queenslander took the first set comfortably against Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania, surrendered the second, but recovered to prevail 6-3 1-6 7-5.

The 15th-seeded Barty had five aces to Begu's two and will next face Belgium's Alison Van Uytvanck, who accounted for Russia's Sofya Zhuk in straight sets.

Former World No.1 Maria Sharapova was in fine form as she began her campaign in Montreal by dispatching Bulgarian qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva 6-1 6-2 in a rain-delayed match from Monday.

"I was aggressive, I served well throughout the match," Sharapova told the press, after her victory.

"I think I did everything a little bit better, especially towards the end of the match."

Johanna Konta battled back from a set down to progress with victory over 11th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko.

The British No.1 won 6-7 (8-6) 6-1 6-2 in two hours and five minutes against the 2017 French Open champion.

Konta's round of 32 opponent will be wild card Victoria Azarenka, who steamrolled France's Kristina Mladenovic 6-0 6-1 in less than an hour.

The vocal support of the home crowd was not enough to carry Canadian Eugenie Bouchard into the second round as she fell 6-2 6-4 to Belgian 14th seed Elise Mertens.

Home hopes now rest on 21-year-old Francoise Abanda, who defeated qualifier Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 6-3 6-2.

Russian 12th seed Daria Kasatkina beat rising Greek talent Maria Sakkari 6-4 4-6 6-1 to set up her first career meeting against Sharapova in the second round.

Other players to advance from the first round on Tuesday included Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro and Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who will face top-seeded Simona Halep on Wednesday.

There were also opening-round victories for Sorana Cirstea, Carla Suarez Navarro, Kiki Bertens, Alize Cornet, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Shuai Zhang.

Sixth seed Caroline Garcia of France, eighth-seeded Czech Petra Kvitova and German 10th seed Julia Georges advanced to the third round with wins on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Garbine Muguruza has withdrawn from the tournament before hitting a ball due to an arm injury.

Olympic Gold medalist Monica Puig will take the Spanish seventh seed's place in the draw and will meet Anastasija Sevastova.
