Multilingual linesperson stuns Roger Federer after obscenity warning in quarter-final

Roger Federer admitted he was stunned when he realised a linesperson could speak multiple languages after he received a language violation.

The world No.3 was pushed to his absolute limit by American world No.100 Tennys Sandgren before prevailing in a 6-3 2-6 2-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 win.

But during the third set of the match, Federer was pulled up and issue concerning a language warning.

A linesperson had reported the incident to the chair umpire and the Swiss star copped an audible obscenity warning from the chair umpire.

Federer attempted to speak to the linesperson but was instructed he had to follow the matter up with the chair umpire.

"Back in the day I feel like we could speak to linespeople," Federer said in his press conference after the match.

"Nowadays they tell me, 'Go speak to the umpire'. Okay, I'll go speak to the umpire.

"I walk across the court because they are not allowed to speak to the players.

"Honestly, to be frustrated at one point for over, I don't know, 15 hours [sic] throughout the match, I think it's normal. I found it a bit tough."

Federer admitted he's always one to keep his cool, but stunned the linesperson understood what he said when he cursed out in "mixed" languages.

"It's not like I'm known to throw around words and whatever. It's not like the whole stadium heard it either," he said

"But no problem, I'll accept it.

"It was a mix. Clearly she (the lineswoman) speaks mixed. Didn't know that."
