Local Connections: The Early Birds

Sport unites people, and it keeps them together. Whether the first ever game is a win or a loss, there's something more than the play itself that keeps Australians coming back to their local club.

Boroondara Tennis Centre, in Melbourne's east, is home to a group of retired pilots and airline workers for whom tennis is more than just a game. The 'Early Birds' have been playing every week for around 30 years, keeping their streak through more than 15 Australian Open men's singles champions (did you know that Djokovic has won it six times?) and the development of drop shots from the pros (this shot only started being used regularly in the 1980s).

With three decades of on-court experience the Early Birds know that a regular game means not only exercise, but socialising, relaxation and connection. They are on-court proof that getting together, rain or shine, is worth the early start.
