NBA star D'Angelo Russell has given Nick Kyrgios a shout-out during the Australian Open - albeit with a weird fail.

Russell, who just agreed a $US117 million ($A171 million) deal with the Golden State Warriors, posted the following tweet after Kyrgios won his first round match against Lorenzo Sonego.

The two incredible athletes have clearly struck up a bond - but there were two intriguing problems with Russell's tweet.

For starters, Russell's shout-out came on Wednesday night (AEDT), a full day after Kyrgios played Sonego.

And the match in Russell's picture, to which he was supposedly "tuned in", was not even Kyrgios' Australian Open clash.

It was a match from 11 months ago, when the Australian upset Rafael Nadal in Acapulco.

Anyway, Kyrgios clearly appreciated the support; which wasn't Russell's first act of solidarity with the Aussie. He also offered a shout-out when Kyrgios went on to win the Acapulco title.

The Australian 23rd seed is back in action on Thursday night, facing Gilles Simon in his round two match on Melbourne Arena.
