Australian Open: Aussie juniors talent Rinky Hijikata cruelly booted from Open in crucial new ruling

Aussie junior Rinky Hijikata has been knocked out of the Australian Open in the most unfortunate of circumstances after he forgot a new controversial rule being trialled in this year’s boys' singles tournament.

The No. 5 seed was sensationally booted when he batted away a let service from his opponent on match point.

In most circumstances the let would neutralise the point, with the server reloading to serve again, but this year the Open is trialling a rule where let serves that land in start the point, as in the Fast4 format, meaning his opponent Zane Khan’s serve was legal.

Before he had time to compute that, Hijikata was out of the tournament.

Khan was awarded the win 6-4 6-4 as the Aussie talent looked around bewildered with the luck that had befallen him.

The trial has been implemented into the boys' tournament with Tennis Australia interested in the possibility of eliminating lets in the professional tournament.

That bid has been met with fierce opposition from the players however, with a whopping 87 per cent who took part in a recent survey opposing the move.

Hijikata gets his chance to atone as top seed in the junior boys' doubles alongside Finn Otto Virtinen.

But the 17-year-old's ends the possibility of a local champion in the boys' singles after wildcard Ken Cavrak also lost in the second round, 6-4 7-5 to Brit Jacob Fearnley.
