'She hung up on me!': Ash Barty answers journalist's phone during press conference

Ash Barty is known for her love of cricket and may well have been inspired by Tim Paine after leaving a journalist red-faced during a press conference.

When she sat down to speak to media gathered at the Adelaide International, one of the phones recording the press conference received an unexpected phone call.

"Does anyone know a Kez? It's got a grandma emoji," Barty asked the media attending as the phone went off.

"Can you put it on Aeroplane Mode?" a voice from the back of the room was heard saying.

But Barty began to have a chinwag with the caller instead.

"Hello? Who are you trying to reach?" Barty asked.

"It's Ash Barty. Who's this?

"He left his phone on during a press conference."

Then Barty looked up in shock.

"She hung up on me!" Barty said, as everyone in the room chuckled.

It was later revealed that the mystery caller was Carlton's AFLW skipper Kerryn Harrington.

"2 things happened today, scored myself an MCC membership and was star struck by @ashbarty and hung up," Harrington tweeted.

"If only I asked her to play for @carltonfc_w instead... #stitchup.

"Sorry @ashbarty, absolutely star struck. What I meant to say was - Will you please come play for @carltonfc_w?"

Barty's reaction to the journalist's phone call was not too dissimilar to Paine during last year's summer of cricket, when the Australian men's Test captain did exactly the same thing.

During the Test series against India, Paine amused media when he picked up and answered a phone call on one of the phones on the table at a press conference.

Barty will take to the court at the Adelaide International on Tuesday with a top seeding.

"Regardless of what number is next to my name - and whether it's one, two, 10, 20, 50 - it's not going to make me any more or less hungry to try and be the best that I can be," she said.

"That is what we're striving for every single day, to try and improve every single day and try and bring the best out of myself.

"Having a number next to your name doesn't guarantee anything - it doesn't guarantee wins.

"You still have to go out there and do the work ... and do your best every single match.

"And that is how I'm going to approach this week here in Adelaide; that is how I'm going to approach the Australian Open."
