Sydney a top major event city: survey

Powered by

Sydney is rated Australia's best city to host another major event, a worldwide survey of young people has indicated.

The YouGov survey rates the NSW capital - but no mention of Melbourne and Brisbane, which harbour thoughts of pitching to host an Olympic Games.

London and New York top the list as major event hosts, according to the Next Generation Events survey presented to a Host Cities summit in Dubai.

Paris, Beijing, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Dubai, Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Sao Paulo and Shanghai are other cities young people see as leading the way as major event hosts.

The survey indicated nine in 10 were keen for established events such as the Olympics to expand into new markets.

"For most, the ability to put on the best show is the single-most important attribute of a host city," the survey said.

"Yet this does not mean resorting to the `usual suspects' time after time.

"Three in five young people believe strongly that events should not be awarded to an established host city over a new market simply because it is considered a 'safe pair of hands'."

More than 2000 people, aged 18-24, from 10 countries including Australia were interviewed for the survey.

While the Olympic Games and football World Cup made the biggest impression in the past four years, six in 10 young people are more interested in arts and culture events than sporting occasions (four in 10).

And two-thirds called for more extreme sports in the Olympic line-up, with 34 per cent supporting the mooted inclusion of skateboarding in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
