Queensland medley specialist Ellen Fullerton has won Australia's fifth bronze medal in the pool, claiming third in the 200m individual medley at the World University Games in Gwangju, Korea.

It was the Uniroos' sole medal on Tuesday, bumping the Australian's down to 15th on the tally with one gold, one silver and seven bronze medals after four days of competition.

Fullerton, who finished seventh in the 400m medley final on Saturday, held the lead at halfway and was still battling for gold with 25m to go, before being swamped by Zhang Sishi of China and Madisyn Cox of the USA, while fellow Queenslander Aisling Scott finished fourth.

"I probably didn't execute my own race plan, I got a bit carried away with the race but I gave it a good shot," Fullerton said.

"I wanted to try and get in front and stay in front, but it might have hurt me a little. But you learn and it's something to take away back to training."

Fullerton still has the 200m freestyle to come with heats and semis on Wednesday.
