McEvoy beats Magnussen in Perth pool

Cameron McEvoy has swum a personal best time in the 100m freestyle at the Perth Aquatic Super Series to edge out Olympic silver medallist James Magnussen.

The 21-year-old touched with a time of 47.56sec, which would have been good enough to win him a gold medal at the world championships last year.

McEvoy's time in Perth was 0.09sec faster than his previous best.

On the comeback trail from shoulder surgery, Magnussen recorded a time of 49.34sec, just 0.01sec quicker than he swam at the Victorian State Championships two weeks ago.

Newly crowned FINA male swimmer of the year Mitch Larkin took out the 100m backstroke event, beating world No.4 Jiayu Xu of China by 0.28sec.

However, his time of 53.11sec was below the time of 52.85sec he recorded in Victoria last month.

Emma McKeon impressed in the 200m freestyle, winning with a time of 1.55.96min, just 0.39sec outside the Australian record.
