Australian swimmer Mitch Larkin has finished fourth in the men's 100m backstroke at the Rio Olympics on Monday night.

Larkin, the reigning world champion in the event and also the 200m backstroke, led at the halfway stage before being overtaken by swimmers including winner Ryan Murphy from the United States.

Larkin's race came just 10 minutes after his girlfriend, fellow Australian Emily Seebohm, finished a disappointing seventh in the women's 100m backstroke final.
