Aussie swimmers miss out at world champs

Open-water swimmers Kai Graeme Edwards and Nicholas Sloman have missed out on direct entry to next year's Tokyo Olympics.

Edwards and Sloman finished 14th and 21st respectively in the men's 10-km open water race at the world championships in Gwangu on Tuesday.

The top 10 finishers in the race earn spots for their countries at the 2020 Olympics.

Germany's Florian Wellbrock edged France's Marc-Antoine Olivier by two-tenths of a second to win the event.

The 21-year-old Wellbrock finished in 1 hour, 47 minutes, 55.90 seconds with compatriot Rob Muffels taking bronze in 1:47:57.40.

Edwards completed the event in 1:48:16.20 while Sloman came in at 1:49:22.70.

The open water races continue Wednesday with the women's 5-kilometre race, followed by the 5-kilometre team relay on Thursday and the 25-kilometre races for men and women on Friday. All are non-Olympic events.
