Australia's Stephanie Gilmore has claimed a record-breaking eighth world title, taking out the final round of the season in California.

Gilmore defeated reigning world champion Carissa Moore in the final, having entered the day in fifth place, winning five straight heats along the way.

The win makes Gilmore the most successful women's surfer ever, taking her past fellow Australian Layne Beachley's seven world titles.

"I don't have much left to be honest," Gilmore said. "I visualised it so much, I was like let's do this, I have a chance.

"I'm so spent. It's been a wild day."

Moore and Gilmore embraced at the end of the final.

"To see a battle of the biggest names on paper on tour who have changed the game of pro surfing, to share the water, it was a long shot for Steph Gilmore," said commentator Joe Turpel.

"One of the most emotional and deserving moments of Steph Gilmore's career. She holds the record to herself, officially an eight-time world champion. What an unbelievable moment in pro surfing history."
