Ski-jumpers break world record and show Eddie The Eagle how it is done

A pair of ski-jumpers who both broke the world record on the same day in Norway will never be confused for Eddie ''The Eagle'' Edwards.

While Eddie The Eagle has had a movie starring Hugh Jackman made about his exploits, Norway’s Robert Johansson and Austrian Stefan Kraft will have to settle for a mix of adoration and amazement at what they have done.

In an event in Norway, Johansson gave home fans plenty to cheer about when he sailed 252m through the air before landing at the base of the hill.

Kraft also made the most of the ideal conditions, beating Johansson by 1.5m to set the second world record of a special day. Both men were in the air for more than eight seconds.

The conditions were such that 20 jumps over 230m were recorded during an amazing weekend.

By comparison to Johansson and Kraft, Eddie The Eagle soared a majestic 71m - albeit in far different conditions - during his memorable efforts in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

While the weekend’s record breakers are true ski-jumpers, Edwards’ unwanted recognition as a ski-dropper seems as appropriate as ever.
