Sixth lay day called in Maui

Organisers are confident the world's best female surfers will finally hit the water this weekend in the last event of the season at Honolua Bay.

A sixth consecutive lay day was called on Thursday, however small waves did begin to emerge, giving hope to an eventual beginning to the World Surf League event in coming days.

"I feel the forecast said there was a possibility of today picking up slowly but it's not here right now, so we are going to be off again," commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer said.

"It's becoming a bit of a theme, but we are going to wait for waves.

"This beginning of movement here at the bay is going to continue to pick up, so I'm hoping for Saturday morning which would be really good for us because Sunday also looks really good."

Organisers have until December 4 for the event to conclude.

Australians Tyler Wright and Dimity Stoyle will compete in the first heat against American Tatiana Weston-Webb.

Fellow Aussies Sally Fitzgibbons, Keely Andrew and Laura Enever are also scheduled to compete in later heats, while Hawaiian Carissa Moore is looking to maintain her 900-point championship lead over American Courtney Conlogue to win the title.
