Shooter Adams earns Olympic spot
Shooter Paul Adams is set to compete at his first Olympics after a standout performance in Australia's final selection event in Sydney.
Adams, who narrowly missed out on going to the 2012 London Games, earned an automatic nomination for Rio with his gold medal performance in the men's skeet at the Australia Cup 2 over the weekend.
The 23-year-old met the qualifying mark of 122 targets from 125 for a place in the semi-final, before winning a tense sudden-death shoot-off for the title with Richard Sammon.
Adams joins Lalita Yauhleuskaya as the only shooters to have met the criteria to be automatically nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee for Rio selection.
Shooting Australia will name its team in early April.
Fan favourite Daniel Repacholi did no harm to his Olympic chances, taking out both the 10m air pistol and 50m pistol events in Sydney.
It came just days after he competed in the World Cup final in Thailand.
Veteran Michael Diamond also had a strong showing, winning the men's trap event to keep his dream alive of a seventh consecutive Olympic campaign.
Two-time Games gold medallist Diamond is looking to join swimming legend Dawn Fraser as only Australian athlete to have won three Olympic gold medals in the same event.
