Sandow and Carney put on slugfest

Before Paul Gallen’s victory over Junior Paulo last night, another couple of NRL players swapped the boots for gloves.

Halves Chris Sandow and Todd Carney gave the crowd plenty to cheer about with an entertaining three round bout.

Carney had reach and height advantages but that didn’t stop Sandow from throwing punches while he jinked from side to side.

Sandow was by far the aggressor with former Sharks half Carney dodging a flurry of punches from the outset.

The former Eels halfback hit the deck twice but looked like he lost his footing and slipped.

Sandow was handed victory by one judge on points but the other two scored it 29-29, leading to a draw.

“It was never going to be pretty,” former NSW five-eighth Carney said.

“We’re footballers not boxers ... but we put our body on the line.”
