Russia to ban marathon runner Ugarov
Russian athlete Viktor Ugarov is facing a ban of up to four years for having snubbed a general IAAF suspension to compete in a marathon in Japan over the weekend, the Russian athletics federation said.
Ugarov won Sunday's marathon at Kanazawa, but in doing so violated Friday's IAAF provisional suspension of the All-Russian Athletics Federation (ARAF) after the country's athletics ruling body was accused of state-sponsored doping.
"We'll sanction him (Ugarov)," ITAR-TASS news agency quoted ARAF's acting president Vadim Zelichenok as saying.
"It will be at least a two-year ban. Maybe a four-year ban."
IAAF has cancelled Ugarov's result at Kanazawa, with the athlete also unable to collect the prize money.
On Tuesday ARAF issued a warning to its athletes that their participation in any competitions outside Russia may cause a ban for breaching the IAAF suspension.
