The Wallabies jersey will revert to the golden glow of 1991 after Rugby Australia chairman Hamish McLennan cast the deciding vote at a unique gathering in Sydney on Thursday night.

A cast of Wallabies greats assembled along with key Rugby Australia figures to vote on which colour shade should form the basis of Test jerseys moving forward.

McLennan told the Sydney Morning Herald that an iconic jersey should not be constantly changing its hue.

"A picture says a thousand words and this shows the madness of our inconsistency," McLennan said.

"We are green and gold, and I underscore gold."

The 1991 jersey beat the 1984 edition in the final as the likes of David Campese, Gary Ella, Nick Farr-Jones, Phil Kearns, Phil Waugh, Michael Cheika and Bob Dwyer cast their votes round by round in head to head jersey matchups.

After a tie, McLennan opted for the 1991 strip which was worn in Australia's first Rugby World Cup victory in England.

It was also the fans' choice, topping a SMH readers poll.
