A trans-Tasman showdown looms in the women's rugby sevens final after New Zealand overpowered France 26-7 to sweep pool B at the Rio Games.

New Zealand's victory on Sunday sees them sweep their pool and enter the knockout stages of the match on the opposite side of the draw to top-ranked Australia.

Australia have already sealed top spot in pool A and will also be happy to avoid second seeds New Zealand until the final, if both get there, on Monday.

NZ were too strong for the previously unbeaten French from the outset, jumping to a 19-0 lead in the first half, as leading duo Portia Woodman and Kayla McAlister again starred.
