'Tongan Thor' at it again with spectacular try

Taniela Tupou, the former New Zealand schoolboy sensation who earned the nickname ‘Tongan Thor’, has brought his rampaging runs to Brisbane club rugby.

Tupou, who is a member of the Queensland Reds, scored a stunning long-range try to secure Brothers a 32-19 victory over Sunnybank on Saturday.

Footage from the match shows the 135kg tighthead prop receive a pass 45m out on the left wing before bumping off one would-be tackler, outpacing the opposition loosehead and then beating two more defenders on his way to the line.

The try was reminiscent of some of his efforts for Sacred Heart College in Auckland which made the then-schoolboy a viral hit around the world.

The Tongan-born star shunned offers from NZ, Europe and Super Rugby franchises around Australia to sign a two-year deal with the Reds, who he has supported since 2011.

Tupou, who has yet to play a game for the Reds, grew up as a fan of Australian rugby due to the number of players of Tongan descent playing for the Wallabies.
