Days out from their Super Rugby opener against the Crusaders, the Chiefs have boosted their squad with two injury cover signings, including Japanese Test prop Hiroshi Yamashita.

Counties Manukau openside Sam Henwood and the 49-cap Yamashita will boost Dave Rennie's squad following season-ending knee injuries to All Blacks prop Nepo Laulala and promising flanker Mitchell Karpik.

Henwood impressed Rennie in last year's national provincial championship, and has maintained fitness playing for Portuguese side Technico.

An experienced tighthead prop, 29-year-old Yamashita joins his Japan Rugby World Cup teammate and captain Michael Leitch from the Kobe-based Kebelco Steelers.

"Sam is ambitious, professional and excited to test himself at this level," Rennie said.

"Yama is an experienced international prop and has quickly made an impression since his arrival."
