Phipps extends Australian rugby contract

Wallabies scrumhalf Nick Phipps will stay in NSW in a bid to play his third rugby union World Cup campaign in 2019.

The 52-Test veteran has signed a two-year contract extension with the Waratahs and Australian Rugby Union, ahead of next month's start to the Super Rugby season.

Phipps, a Sydney product, is three games away from reaching the 100-cap milestone in Super Rugby.

He switched to the Waratahs three years ago after making his debut with Melbourne Rebels in 2011.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said the 28-year-old was yet to reach his prime.

"His best is yet to come," Cheika said.

"That's what this decision is about, playing the best rugby of his career in Australia and for Australia."

Phipps had a mixed end-of-season European tour with Australia last year.

He was strong in the tour opener against Wales before starting the next three matches on the bench with Will Genia preferred in the No.9 jersey.

But he struggled against England when Genia returned to France for club duties.
