James O'Connor set to be axed for Wallabies' final Spring Tour clash with France amid grim Ireland post-mortem

James O'Connor looks set to be left out of the Wallabies squad once again as their horror European tour heads to France this week.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the 35-year-old won't feature for Australia as the fallout from an ugly loss to Ireland on Sunday (AEDT) continues.

O'Connor played every match of the Rugby Championship but was not part of squads that lost to England and Italy, before returning this past weekend in the 46-19 defeat.

The veteran playmaker had some bright moments, but struggled in the wet conditions which was highlighted by an errant pass to Max Jorgensen and a fumbled high kick.

His return to play Ireland came as a result of Carter Gordon's quad injury.

Joe Schmidt was full of praise for O'Connor despite the loss at Aviva Stadium.

"He brought really good energy, probably put a couple of really nice touch kicks in ... we didn't take advantage of it," the coach said

"He made some really good tackles, I know that's probably not what the out-half is valorised for, but he's such a competitor.

"I thought we probably overreached a couple of times passing long in those wet conditions, I think maybe a shorter passing game and we'll have a look at that.

"James is very good at self-analysis and having a look at the game. We'll obviously catch up as a team and try to break that down, his game and others' games."

While he looks set to miss the clash in Paris, it's not yet clear if O'Connor has played his last game in the gold jumper after a career revival this year.
