England's merciless media have rounded on their rugby team following their 'humiliating', 'shambolic' loss to the Wallabies.

The knives came out immediately after the 33-13 loss which saw England become the first host nation to be bundled out of a World Cup before the quarter-finals.

In typically dramatic fashion, The Daily Star newspaper described the defeat as 'The End of the World'.

The Daily Mail sarcastically panned the home side for being poor Cup hosts, further describing the side as "callow" and clueless.

"Only the worst hosts leave their own party this early," the newspaper declared.

"England's tournament has been an ungodly mess from start to finish. On Saturday night, they were pathetic.

"They went out with a whimper. If the defeat to Wales last week had been desperately close, this capitulation to Australia was men against boys."

The Telegraph was one of many newspapers to call for coach Stuart Lancaster's head.

"Rudderless England crash out of home World Cup in humiliating fashion," the headline screamed.

"Lancaster would not fall on his sword tonight but it is very difficult indeed to see him weathering this storm."

The Mirror accused England of a "shambolic tournament display" , while the Guardian declared simply: "England put to the sword."
