'Big in': Wallabies weapon Marika Koroibete can trip up Springboks in Rugby Championship rematch in Perth

It will take more than one winger to topple the mighty Springboks Michael Hooper believes Marika Koroibete can make a genuine difference to the wounded Wallabies in Saturday's Rugby Championship rematch in Perth.

The world-class Koroibete appears the obvious replacement for Filipo Daugunu, despite Dylan Pietsch getting a run off the bench ahead of him at Suncorp Stadium.

Daugunu broke his leg in the ugly 33-7 loss while Koroibete watched on from the stands after joining Joe Schmidt's squad for the first time from his new home in Japan.

"Marika wasn't quite ready. This week was about orientating and getting him back up to speed," Wallabies coach Schmidt told reporters last week.

"I think Marika will be available beyond this week, but this week was a little bit too soon."

The Springboks unveiled a team with 10 starting changes on Tuesday while Schmidt will name his team on Thursday.

Koroibete is a two-time John Eales Medallist as Australia's best player - only Hooper (four) and Israel Folau (three) have more.

"Marika's surely got to be someone who can step into that fold and adopt Schmidt-ball really well because Marika just does Marika things," Hooper said on Stan Sport's Between Two Posts.

"You know he's going to pop up where he needs to pop up - in the right place and the right time. He's just got an absolutely uncanny ability to do that.

"And I also think in terms of South African point of view, like 'oh, Koroibete's back, that's a big in.' That's a big in - like Marika is a genuine, world-class, top-level winger when he's performing, so that's great for the Aussies but also something to consider for the South Africans."

Former Wallabies loose forward Stephen Hoiles said Koroibete's teammates would want the 32-year-old veteran of 59 Tests lining up for the national anthem alongside them.

"Even if he's slightly off, I don't think Marika's that type of guy that's really going to let a little bit of S and C (strength and conditioning) hold him back from good performance. I think we need him out there," Hoiles said.

Schmidt also has some decisions to make in the second row with Nick Frost and Jeremy Williams both ruled out with concussions.

Reds recruit Josh Canham has been called into the squad while Force veteran Sam Carter is training with the team this week.

"I'd imagine Tom Hooper might come in," Hooper said.

"I think he's been training pretty hard. Big body, they want him to bring a real physical presence into the game so potentially he can step in.

"(Angus) Blyth has been in there, still in the squad."

Ex-Wallabies back Morgan Turinui said the Brisbane hammering highlighted the need for Schmidt to call upon Will Skelton and Richie Arnold as 'Giteau Law' players.

Both France-based giants were members of last year's Rugby World Cup squad.

"I think it's obvious we need something like that," Turinui said.

"Rugby is a power game. The power teams won the Olympic sevens. They all went deep and the power teams are going well in world rugby. Richie's come out of a great couple of seasons. We didn't get to see the best of him at the World Cup. I'd be happy to throw him in the mix."

South Africa has won back-to-back World Cup titles despite having players scattered around the planet.

Rassie Erasmus's Rugby Championship squad features 22 players from South African clubs with six in Japan, two each in England and France and one (RG Snyman) in Ireland.

"When they left Super Rugby and then they opened up the borders and let the Springboks go and play everywhere, I thought, 'Oh, it's gonna hurt the Springboks.' But it's done the exact opposite," Randwick coach Hoiles said.

"They've worked really well with their overseas players. I think it works because they've got such a clear understanding of how they want to play and they really believe everything Rassie says. If he and his team come up with a certain plan for that week, they're all in.

"You look at Australia, we're three coaches in three years now. You've just learned how Dave Rennie wants to play and then Eddie (Jones) comes in and tries to strip it all back and go this unstructured approach and then Joe Schmidt comes in - and from all reports - he's trying to make it as simple as possible as well.

"But the Springboks just walk in and it's like they're returning home to their club. 'Hey mate, ready to go.' Here's the game plan. 'Yeah, I don't even need to see that, I've done that for five years'."
